As the real winter weather hit us in South Wales this week, many people have asked about running in the current conditions. Many will just stop running or head into the warmth of the gym, but for those of you who want to continue outdoors, here are a few tips.
When running in the snow and ice, planning your route is very important. You can shorten your stride and slow down a bit, but there will still be some very slick, icy patches out there. If you can find a route where you can spend part of the time running off the pavement and on the grass you will be able to avoid some of the slicker spots. Look well ahead when running. Hard-packed snow will be much easier to run on than ice. To help with traction you may also want to consider running with a pair of off-road shoes as they will provide better grip than normal road shoes. Some even have Goretex which will keep your feet warm and dry.
You obviously will want to wear appropriate clothing as mentioned previously, but also think about wearing some high-visibilty clothing or accessory. Remember under the weather conditions it will take drivers longer to stop and though some drivers will be more careful, some will also be nervous and in a hurry to get where they are going. The more you make yourself seen to motorists, the safer you'll get home.
You might also want to consider wearing gloves or a hat. Your smaller appendages (fingers and toes) will get colder before the rest of your body. We have lots of light-weight running gloves that will keep you warm without overheating you like thicker gloves would. A hat will keep body heat from escaping and help protect your ears from cold and wind.

If you plan to run on snow and ice, I've seen quite a few mentions (mostly USA) of people wearing Yaktrax [ www.yaktrax.co.uk/shop/products.php?cat=9] this winter. But you aren't supposed to wear them if it'll be a mix of that and other surfaces, as it'll damage them (and/or the surface)

I used to live in Alaska and Yaktrax were used everywhere. You could buy them in the "checkout line" (magazines and sweets near the till -- translation from my American English) or at a Petrol station. They are excellent for walking and pretty reliable for running. I totally agree, you will tear them up on other surfaces. Also if you wear them, be sure to take them off before going into a shop or anything. On a regular floor surface they are slippier than the ice outside. They do slip on and off pretty easily though, and will help with traction outside.
