Hello. Sian here, Massage Therapist at Moti Bristol and Personal Trainer.
It seems trivial to many, but for sure worth a mention...
With the cold weather looking to set in for a while, be sure to think about those little things when training in the cold.
1) Clothing. See Andys advice here ... mymoti.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=71
2) Ice. Just take extra care, it seems to be cold enough at the moment that alot of the ice isnt even melting throughout the day.
Many say shortening your running stride and keeping your feet lower to the ground reduces the risk of slipping, falling or straining muscles, but this style wont suit everyone. Just be careful.
and its not just you slipping about so..
3) Be seen. Invest in something reflective. Speaking as someone who's been in a road traffic accident. I can assure you, its not fun and cars dont have runners high on the agenda of things they are looking out for.
4) Make the warm up section of your run longer and more intense. Try to avoid speed work in the bitter cold, its significantly increases your risk of injury, many people keep the winter for maintence running - long slow durations.
5) Keep hydrated. Despite the cold weather, you'll still heat up and lose fluids through sweat. Cold air also has a drying effect, which can increase the risk of dehydration. Make sure you drink water or a sports drink before, during, and after your run.
6) Once your home, stretch!! and get straight out of any cold wet clothes.
Have fun guys.
Anyone fancy a trip to the sun yet!!!!
