Hi I did the Bristol half last weekend which was my first and am hoping to do the Cardiff half on the 18 October. During the Bristol half I developed a blister which pretty much covers the whole of the underneath of the top part of my little toe. While ordinarily this wouldn't bother me I'm conscious that I need to keep up my training in preparation for the Cardiff half. I've read the best thing to do is to not pop it which I haven't, but what can I do to not make it worse and more comfortable while running. When not running it doesn't feel to bad as long as my toes aren't squashed!!! I hope this isn't too much of a pointless question and that there are some top tips!!!! Sharon

@sharon I can talk about this a bit, having had a deep blister on the tip of my little toe this year, that I didn't treat right If you have time, and are interested, I recommend John Vonhof's book. You can find details at www.fixingyourfeet.com/ (and buy at Amazon, say), and there are articles on that website too. If it disagrees with what I say, trust him You're right that the best thing to do is not to pop it, if you want it to heal. But if you want to keep running on it, you do need to 'pop' it as soon as possible (else the friction will just make it bigger). You need to stop it filling with fluid, so that it can dry, and you need to keep it clean (v important as you really don't want it to ulcerate and go septic) until it's healing. I can write more if you want, else try Vonhof's site for how to lance blisters re. comfort when running : You can buy a gel toe protector, but that may take up too much space in your toe box (and may be awkward for a little toe). I used a Compeed toe plaster (not a cheap option), held with Micropore (paper) tape, as it wasn't bulky, and doesn't damage the other toes. All these things are in a chemist/ (supermarket). The nurse used a bandage with honey on it (antiseptic) during the time I wasn't able to run Update : I should add that when I used the Compeed, I just had raw skin. You should try to keep the 'roof' of the blister undamaged (and infection out of it), and in that case you may find a turn or two of Micropore tape on its own is ok ...but depends on run intensity, shoe (and sock) fit, moisture etc

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I've just been to the sight you recommended and have read that if a blister is in a location where pressure will cause it to grow or pop then the best thing to do is to drain it. So that's what I am going to do - keeping the top layer intact, as best as I can!!! I'll then strap the little fella up for my easy run tomorrow and see how it feels in preparation for my long run on Sunday. I'm thinking of investing in his book (you should be getting commission!!!) as it sounds like a bit of a bible for runners. I have to say it didn't feel right that everything I was reading was saying do not pop. It didn't seem to fit my circumstance. Again thank you for the advise. Sharon

Hi guys, My name is Rich and I work at Moti. Currently I am in the fortunate position of being a professional track athlete at International Standard.....and if nothing else this gives me a lot of experience with blisters! A tip for any fellow suffers I have picked up is to soak the problem area in Salt water where possible....this dries the blister and also keeps it clean.....yes it will sting but it'll be worth it....and get you back out running again Remember to pad the area afterwards and secure in place with tape. Rich
